Why All The Beef?
Wall Street has this great culture of goofy bets. There's always money involved. But money, unless the amount is just plain sick, is not what draws the crowd. Wagers gain notoriety when they involve endurance or the specter of public humiliation.
Like the milk bet. Every couple of years one trader bets another that he/she can drink a gallon of milk in one hour. And the action—odds, side bets, demands for referees—spread across the trading floor like brushfires.
I once played a tennis match with another broker, where the loser had to wear his wife's tennis outfit across the trading floor. That's another story. And don't ask.
Goofy bets, though, are not the exclusive province of Wall Street.
