Continued from Australia: The Rain Just Keeps Coming Part I

All this water together with the continuous rain Brisbane has been getting means that at 4.00 am thursday Jan. 13th ( about midday Wed Jan.12th NYC time) Brisbane will be flooded and it will be bad. So bad that if we had breakfast again at your hotel, we would need snorkel & flippers.

The Central Business District was shut down today and everyone told to go home as power had to be turned off. The pics below tell the story as it developed today – remember the river is going to rise about another 4ft before it peaks in the morning.

But that will not be the end – it will back off slightly and then peak again at high tide tomorrow afternoon. 10,000 homes are expected to go under – low lying areas are already under. 70,000 people are being evacuated to temp shelter at various locations.

Today, Wednesday Jan 12th, 80% of the state of Queensland has been declared a disaster zone and its a long way from being over – the rain is still coming down.

I was in Brisbane in early Dec. I left on Sat 18th driving back to Melb and went through Toowoomba to get on to the highway that goes straight down the centre of NSW.

The rain was torrential that day and it has rained since.
