Because The Pell Heist is about the recovery of six priceless paintings stolen during October of 1986 (while the Red Sox were busy losing the World Series), I’m obsessed with all things art.
My friend and Harvard senior, George Pocheptsov, recently sent me this photo and description of his painting, “The Abduction of Europa.”
Europa and her three sisters play in the bright emerald meadows. They collect flowers near the coast and the flurry of multicolored petals gracefully flutter around them in the spring air. Zeus, who falls in love with Europa, transforms into a dazzling white bull that comes to meet the girl. Europa becomes fascinated by this pleasant and serene animal, who is depicted in abstract color tones near the top of the artwork. She eventually sits on him, and he takes her away to the island of Crete where she becomes a Cretan princess.
To the best of my knowledge, none of George’s paintings have been the target of a heist. In addition, the Red Sox have won three World Series since those tragic events in 1986.
If you are now obsessed with all things art, you’re going to enjoy the art news that will flood out of Germany, Norb, probably for years and years. Those old Nazis just keep on giving…after they took and took.
It’s an amazing story, Kay. I wonder how many people knew.
Good point! Probably at least a handful of people knew. Some paintings by Chagall are said to not exist in any catalog. I wonder what happens to something like that, with no provenance? Oh the lawyers are going to have such fun, and make out like bandits.
I just want to see those paintings!
